n search of better business, a big American carnival opens in Munich, Germany. Joe the barker befriends attractive pickpocket Willie, finds her a job, and romances her. Then high diver Frank recruits Willie as his assistant. When Frank falls for her and proposes marriage, Joe takes the opportunity to brush her off. After the marriage, Joe figures he can still exercise his sexual hold over Willie; but tragedy intervenes. Filmed entirely on location in Germany, CARNIVAL STORY incorporates a highly interesting German twist on the cinematography, story and perspective. It's a bit of a sleeper and one which, for good reason, seems to delight many movie fans who happen upon it and discover how well this film seems to work after so many years. The imagry of the circus and carnival backdrop work well in combination to the storyline and its suspensful conclusion.
